Love for Country
Discovery's focus on nature play, being outdoors and going to bush camp or beach excursions is all about developing a love for Country.
We hope the children at the Discovery Early Learning Centres develop a love for Country, growing to wanting to nourish and protect it. The programs and experiences we run are the beginnings of their lessons about custodianship (koori curriculum).
Milpara Early Learning recently headed over to the school grounds to do their bit for the environment on 'Schools Clean Up Australia Day'. This was a great way to inspire the children to learn about the impact of rubbish on our environment and to help look after their community.
Our Lauderdale centre talked with the children about the beach belonging to everybody, and how it is everybody’s responsibility to care for these special places. The children enjoyed the opportunity to be proactive in cleaning up the beach and surrounding bush areas.
Recently our Northern Services which consists of Launceston, Ravenswood and Bungawitta came together to acknowledge and join in recognising the importance of Harmony week and explore Aboriginal Culture. Utilising the large outdoor area adjoining Bungawitta the children had the opportunity to go on country and engage in a range of experiences such as weaving, exploring clay and painting with ochre. We were joined by Aboriginal Elder Graeme who shared a story with us and shared some palawa kani words with the children. We recognise the importance of coming together to collaborate and share in combined learning opportunities and we look forward to continuing to engage in these important experiences together.
