Referendum Position Statement 7

Discovery Early Learning Centres is committed to Reconciliation. waranta (we) acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land, the palawa and pakana, and pay respect to Elders past, present and emerging, for they hold the memories, traditions and hopes for future generations.

We recognise that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are connected to the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and have nurtured the land on which we learn, play, and grow since creation.

Australians will soon have their say in a referendum to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Constitution through an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. The proposed constitutional amendment will enact the first element of the Uluru Statement from the Heart. This Voice will empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to inform the Government on issues impacting their communities and people. The United Nations Rights of Indigenous Peoples states that First Nations people should have a say in matters that affect them. When Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ perspectives are taken into account, processes are more likely to be better targeted and improve lives over the long term, closing the gap and overcoming the Indigenous disadvantage that currently exists.

Embedding a Voice in the Constitution will respectfully recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Australian history, unifying us as a nation. It is time for us to show our commitment to ensuring their stories, knowledge, language, traditions, and truths are shared, respected, and valued by all Australians. We are walking with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and voting YES, as the next step on our journey of cultural responsiveness, acceptance, inclusion and belonging for all children, families, and communities.

When we have power over our destiny our children will flourish. They will walk in two worlds and their culture will be a gift to their country." A YES vote is a step in making this precious gift a reality.
