Promoting and supporting children's rights to ensure their safety and wellbeing
Stopping bullying isn't just about responding to incidents – it's about proactively building a culture as a community where kindness thrives and every child feels safe, valued, and empowered to speak out
Empowering children involves us respecting each child’s voice, agency, and autonomy in shaping their day. We design experiences that give them the opportunity share their opinions, and choices, to design the outcome, and practice their skills as they independently complete tasks. We give them opportunity to build their confidence, reinforcing their self-esteem through experiences they enjoy. Children in our care are empowered to recognise their rights as individuals as defined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: to have their dignity and rights respected; to speak up; to be heard; to be kept safe; to be protected and to be taken seriously.
Discovery educators work to make sure that all the children in their care are looked after, feel like they belong, feel safe and protected. We reinforce the message that we all belong, that we will always take what the children say seriously, and that we will do everything we can to help them sort out a worry or concern they may have.
Discovery is committed to promoting child safety for ALL children, regardless of their gender, race, religious belief, age, disability, sexual orientation, family, or social background. We will promote and ensure the cultural safety of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and children from culturally or linguistically diverse backgrounds and promote a safe environment for all children with a disability. All adults involved with Discovery have the responsibility to understand and activate their role in preventing, detecting, responding, and reporting any suspicions of child abuse and maintaining a culture of child safety.
Global parenting advocates Triple P - Positive Parenting Program, remind us that empowering children's rights is a solution to the worsening childhood bullying issue. Carol Markie-Dadds, Triple P International Country Director, says that “The solution lies in empowering parents and carers, who remain the most influential figures in a child's life, to confidently support their child if they’re experiencing bullying.”
